Artificial intelligence model makes cancer treatment less toxic

It's Necessary

Glioblastoma the most aggressive form of brain cancer is a malignant tumor in the brain or spinal cord, adults with the disease typically live no more than 5 years, during these years patients must endure a combination of radiation therapy and multiple drugs. which causes these years to be a painful marathon. to shrink the tumor size doctors often prescribe a combination of radiation therapy and drugs that can cause debilitating side effects for patients.

Now, MIT Media Lab researchers have developed an AI model that could make dosing regimens less toxic but still shrinking tumor size. the paper was at the 2018 Machine Learning for Healthcare conference at Stanford University.

Reward & punishment 

In order to create this artificial intelligent agent that could determine the best doses for glioblastoma patients. the researchers at MIT used Self-learning, more commonly known as unsupervised learning is a category of machine learning where the algorithm is not provided with labeled data. which means, in this case, the presence of data containing records of doses and their affectivity and side effects.
Initially, they started by creating a testing group of 50 simulated glioblastoma patients based on a large dataset of previously treated patients. After running a reinforcement learning algorithm. Then they asked their AI to recommend doses of several drugs typically used to treat glioblastoma [oftemozolomide (TMZ) and a combination of procarbazine, lomustine, and vincristine (PVC)] for each patient at regular intervals (either weeks or months).

Perfect Dose for a specific patient

to train the AI conducted 20000 test runs for each simulated patient.Next, the reacherchers tested the algorithm's predictions on 50 new simulated patients and found interesting result, that it could decrease both doses and their frequency and still shrik the tumor effectively. the Agent can take into account more specific information about the patient like medical history and tumor size and prescribe a personalized.

reinforced learning (RL) is a method inspired by behavioral psychology, in which a model learns to favor certain behavior that leads to the desired outcome. so after the AI agent prescribed a dose, it will be checked then if the AI prescribed a tumor-shrinking dosage, it will be rewarded. and receives a penalty in case it prescribed the maximum doses all the time. AI learns like a child touches the fire source it burns so he stays away from it. or it's less rewarding. 

The approach was used to train the computer program DeepMind that in 2016 made headlines for beating one of the world’s best human players in the game “Go.” It’s also used to train driverless cars in maneuvers, such as merging into traffic or parking, where the vehicle will practice over and over, adjusting its course, until it gets it right.

Finally, This is one of the fields where AI shines and arise as a necessity for our future, the world knows that we should manifest AI in good ways and start regularizing this technology and build a community that believs in the ethics of techn use.
